About the Technology
The Waikato Councils are using
ESRI’s Open Data software to open up data, documents and other information to the public. This will allow external agencies and members of the public free access to find and use our datasets to enhance existing or create new applications; or to use within your own data or GIS projects. Data from this site can be downloaded in a variety of formats and in many cases APIs are available.
The work within the Waikato aligns to the
Open Government Data Programme which is a cross government programme, making government data available for reuse. There is a wealth of background information about open data and the programme available from the
data.govt.nz/open-data website.
Managing Data
The data provided on this site will be constantly evolving as each Council continues to update, add and improve the information available. The site itself may also be periodically updated and may occasionally be unavailable during periods of system maintenance.
Although this is a regional platform, each council manages their own data which is uploaded or referenced in the case of existing web services, into their own ArcGIS Online organisational account. This approach ensures that the originating council always remains in full control of its own data resources, and as such any queries or feedback relating to a particular dataset should always be directed back to the Council that maintains it. Individual councils are clearly referenced as the owner on each data resource available on the portal.
